On my recent visit to Gulmarg (my maiden summertime visit as well), I was simply overwhelmed by the onslaught of the local flora that fluttered around in the pleasant Himalayan breeze. However, let me share my last winter’s experience at this beautiful idyll. I, along with my friends from college, was looking forward to a skiing trip at none other than Gulmarg, the place to be if you are a winter sports enthusiast. Zeroing in on The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa, which is perhaps the best Gulmarg ski resort, we began our up slope journey to Gulmarg to witness nature’s play in the snowy backdrop of the Himalayas leaving behind our hotel in Srinagar.
With freezing climes outside, we were welcomed at The Khyber with unparalleled warmth, literally! Central heating is of essence in such places and this resort being the uber luxury boutique hotel it is, doesn’t fail to impress in terms of that. Delicious Kahwa constituted the next step of this warm welcome. I was, later, informed by locals that this Kashmiri tea is oft consumed due to its healing and warming properties. Entering our rooms, we were engulfed with the beauty that confronted us from the French windows. Setting aside the obvious and expected luxury factor that’s synonymous and an integral part of the Khyber hospitality, we were, spellbound by the splendid beauty of Gulmarg covered in all her winter glory. A refreshing swim in their heated pool or perhaps a relaxing spa session with the falling snow, drifting against the windows is an extraordinary experience to be had at this Gulmarg ski resort. Snowball fights mustn’t be missed in the expansive grounds, neither should be skiing sessions on the freshly powdered slopes of the Apharwat Range.
